Getting an Internship
Before you graduate college and earn your degree, one of the best ways to gain experience in your field of work is by getting an internship. Coming out of college, companies are looking to hire the people with the most experience. Working an internship is something that would give you an advantage over someone else who wants the same job. But as a student, where do you go if you're looking for an internship?
Every internship will vary with competitiveness and required experience depending on what the position is. Even though every internship is different, a good place to start a search is your school's Career Services or Internships Programs offices. Here advisors can point you in the right direction and give you applications based on the career you're interested in. Also, a lot of people get internships based on their connections. They know someone or can get in touch with someone who gets them the internship. Your network is an important tool you can use to get an internship. According to LendEDU's 2017 Internship Report, a survey showed that 91% of students thought the most important factor in getting an internship was their connections (thebalance.com).
After you have applied for an internship you wait to hear back from the employer. A good way to show interest is by calling the employer and asking about the status of your application. If they think you a fit candidate for the spot they will call you to set up a meeting and carry out an interview. Before the meeting you should do some research on the company and the position. Knowing more about the company will better prepare you for the interview. The better prepared you are the more likely you will get the internship. Small things can set one applicant apart from another.
