Black Friday

With Thanksgiving coming up, I started thinking about all the delicious food, the incredible football games, spending time with family, and Black Friday shopping. Well what is Black Friday? When did it gain its importance, and what brought on the term “Black Friday.” Black Friday is “the day after Thanksgiving, one of the busiest shopping days because of discounts offered by retailers.” Now there is not just Black Friday, but also Cyber Monday. With Cyber Monday becoming more popular, there has been a decrease in participants on Black Friday. According to The Insider, in 2015 there were 102 million people, compared to 2012 when there was 147 million people out shopping.

Black Friday Timeline
1924- The first advertisements for post thanksgiving day shopping was first seen at the annual Macy’s day parade.
1930s- The day after Thanksgiving is a popular shopping day, but slowed down during the Great Depression.
1960s- The term “Black Friday” originated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was first used in the 1950s to describe the crowds of people at football games and sporting events.
1970s- “Black Friday” became known as the day that businesses went from being in the red to being in the black.
1990s- “Black Friday” became its own officially, unofficial holiday.
2000s- Cyber Monday has become a very popular event, and has cut down a little on the amount of people going out on Black Friday.

“Black Friday” has become a very popular event with the United States, and it helps companies go from the red zone to the black zone in the books. It is a great boost to our economy. In fact so much that when Franklin D. Roosevelt was in office he moved Thanksgiving to the fourth Thursday in November from 1939-1941 to help the economy. This became known as Franksgiving.
