Talent Management and Representation
22 October 2017
One of my favorite things to do in my free time is watch TV series on Netflix, Hulu, or HBO. One of my standout favorite series is Entourage on HBO. The show is about a young actor from Queens named Vincent Chase who moves to LA with his life long best friends Eric, Johnny, and Turtle. My favorite character in the show is Vincent's agent Ari Gold. My liking of this character made me curious about the position of an agent and the business aspects behind the profession.
Talent agents are people who work in between talented individuals and the people who hire them. Agents are the ones who work to get the talent hired. Talent agents normally represent actors, musicians, athletes, writers, and performers. Most of agents communication is done over the phone while negotiating deals with potential employers for their clients. Agents work at new and innovative ways to promote their clients and sell their skills.
The workplace of an agent depends on his or her field of expertise and can range from a movie studio, music studio, athletic complex, to a performance hall. Agents also often go to social events like parties, viewings, openings, and premieres to expand their social networking. A big aspect of business with agents is that your connections and who you know is very important. The most common cities in America for talent agents to work is New York, Hollywood, and Nashville. The salary for agents vary depending on the industry and performance of the clients, but according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the average salary of agents across all fields was $87,430.
Talent agents are hard workers and are often very busy. The career fascinates me and it is something that I could see myself doing in the future. I see how the important aspects of business play into the career field.

My point of view was shifted a bit after reading this post for the better. I feel more informed about talent agents now, before reading this I was completely ignorant to everything but the name and popular cities. I was not aware of how much they actually earned, which was the most interesting point in my opinion. For some reason I was actually shocked to hear they go to parties. I expected them to be all work in the office, but I ignored the fact they have to make connections somehow. On a final note, I think this field sounds like a great option for a career.
