Business in Music

For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated with music. Although I am not musically talented myself, music has played a large role in my life. Music has almost therapeutic effects when it comes to my mood. Music can help relax me and make my mood go from bad to good. I think it would be really cool to have a job in the music industry so I did some research on what jobs a business major can get in the music industry.

One career a business major can have in the music industry is a label manager. The label manager oversees the everyday operations and is in charge of making the business deals. They are responsible for signing artists to the label and creating the contracts for them. As the leader, the label manager must have the essential leadership skills any other business leader would need. The business side of the music industry is handled by the label manager while the creativity is left to the artists.

Another career that a business major can have in the music industry is a booking agent. Booking agents are the ones who schedule artists to play concerts, festivals, tv shows, clubs, and so on. Booking agents work to get as much money as they can from the venues that the artists book. Having good communications skills is key to being successful as a booking agent. Booking agents are sometimes also responsible for promoting the artists show.

Along with label manager and booking agent, a job a business major could get in the music industry is artist manager. Artist manager is the person who represents the artist. Managers work closely with the artists and help advise them on career decisions. They plan out the artists days and get them interviews by radio, magazine, or tv. Working in the music industry would be a dream come true for me and with a business degree, these are all obtainable careers.
