A Club within the Business Field at MSU (Prompt # 5)

On Michigan State’s campus like many other schools there are numerous clubs, a club for anyone if you look hard enough. With being a young business major I was on the hunt for a club that would help me further my connections, and to improve my skills and tactics in the business world. With the help of Women in Business Students Association (WBSA) I am able to fulfill all those needs and so many more in my hunt of club.

WBSA allows other young women like myself to grow as a woman, by providing a mentor and mentee program to provide advice to help younger students grow and gain knowledge of their field of interests. By being a part of the mentor mentee program a mentee is able to meet with their mentor as little or as often as they please. The mentor is an upperclassmen that will help their underclassmen or mentee with everything and anything, but they will definitely be there to help them with applying to the Business College Broad whenever is required. Other than providing a mentor mentee program WBSA also does many other things such as teaching their young women how to be philanthropic.
Young women are taught about philanthropy and volunteering through spending time with animals in shelters at the local area Humane Society. Members also participate in the selling of breast cancer bracelets to raise money for the breast cancer foundation. As well as going on a breast cancer walk.
WBSA does not stop with just providing mentors and opportunities of students to volunteer they also provide Fortune 500 speakers to come and talk about numerous topics such topics to cover in a resume, how to prepare and execute an interview. Other opportunities provided to members are internship and job fairs, as well as a fake/ practice business fair where members were able to bring their interviews and practice their elevator pitches on real recruiters from companies ranging in sizes from smaller companies to large Fortune 500s such as PepsiCo. The recruiters then gave participants feedback to help them prepare for the real Internship and Job fair a few days later.

The E-board covers everything that will go on within the meeting, as well as upcoming events that will be held, and give information on prior events. Emails are sent out before and after meetings to let members know what was covered and what is coming up in events for the club. The club shows to members that communication is important in all aspects of life, from family and friends to the workplace and everywhere in between.

All of these events are grooming young women to be successful in the business field. As well as teaching them what is necessary to succeed in life. Many of the lessons that we as young women will learn in WBSA will help to translate all aspects of women’s lives.

  1. I really thought that this post was interesting because, although I am not in business, I would certainly be interested if the nursing program had a mentor mentee program in order to prepare me better for what is to come in my future. I think that it is important that we get help from upperclassman and that we listen to what they have to say about success within their field. It seems to be a very successful way to get acquainted with what you are potentially going to be doing and hopefully gives you an idea of whether or not you want to pursue a degree within the field. Have you found the mentor mentee program to be helpful in regards to your own career path?

    1. Yes, I have we have just started the mentor/mentee program about a week ago, but the first time that we met we discussed my goals for the future, the classes that I am taking and how they are going. We also talked about internships for the summer and how I can better my interview skills and improve my resume.
